Every fishpond needs a nutrient-poor water. If excess nutrients are produced, they will over time upset the ecological system. The organic particles must be removed from the pond water in a timely manner. This is the central task of a pond filter. Depending on the model, the filters differ in terms of appearance, price and interior. Modern and effective module filters do not consist of one filter foam, but of several foams arranged directly behind each other. The foams have pores of different sizes and filter coarse and fine dirt particles out of the water. Without the filter foams, the large, thread-producing algae particles would block the sensitive filter technology or damage the filter material. The filter foam is, however, not only extremely important for filtering the water, but also for bacteria.
The filter foam offers the important filter bacteria a large settlement area. These settle around 3 cm deep in the foam and then migrate through the fine or coarse-pored fabric of the foam. When the filter is in operation, a fine sludge is deposited on the foam. This serves the bacteria as an important nutrient. If several filter foams are used in one filter, they must be arranged correctly. Foams with larger pores pull all coarse dirt particles out of the pond water. What does not stick to the foams is then pulled out of the water by the sponges with the smaller pores. In spring the pond water is still cold and therefore the bacteria do not work so effectively. For this reason, the sediment is coarse and the dirt particles are increasingly deposited on the coarse-pored filter foams.
Each filter foam has pores of different sizes. The pore size plays an important role in the efficient operation of the filter. If the filter foam is used incorrectly or has too small pores, its surface closes too quickly and no water can get through. Such a case leads to problems during operation. The pore size shall be expressed in the unit ‘ppi’ and either in inch or inch. A filter foam with a pore size of 50 ppi (pores per inch) is much finer than a swarm with a width of only 10 ppi. Foams with a smaller number of pores are suitable for coarser dirt particles. A filter foam with 50 ppi has 50 pores and is suitable for smaller particles.
Commercial filter foams differ in size (in cm), colour and number of pores (ppi). Some manufacturers use the terms filter mat or filter sponge instead of filter foam. The filter foam can be used in both mechanical and biological filters (for the colonisation of bacterial cultures) and can be cut to an individually suitable size. This is necessary when whole foam boards are bought in the trade. However, the filter foam should never be bought used. If filter foam is needed for a Japanese Koi pond, this must meet strict requirements. The Japanese fish are much more sensitive than goldfish and need a very good water climate.
