Drugstore articles: Macadamia Nüsse Video Guide

Originally, the macadamia tree is native to the Australian rainforest. This tree can reach a height of up to 15 meters and is evergreen. The name Macadamia goes back to the German explorer and botanist Baron Ferdinand Jakob Heinrich von Mueller, who named the plant after his friend Dr. John Macadam. The macadamia nut began its worldwide triumphal march in the second half of the 20th century, when it became one of Australia’s most successful export hits. Today, the popular nuts are grown not only in Australia, but also in New Zealand, Brazil, Kenya and Hawaii. Macadamia nuts are available on the market all year round due to the different harvest times in the countries where they are grown.

The complex production process makes the macadamia nut very expensive. Macadamia trees not only grow very slowly, they also place high demands on their environment. Once the ripe fruit has fallen from the tree, it must be collected and completely removed from its skin. The harvest then dries in the air for a few months until the nuts have reached a humidity level of 1.5%. For no other nut variety does the expression ‘hard shell, soft core’ apply as much as to the macadamia nut – because the shells of the nuts are so hard that they can only be cracked with very special steel cylinders. Subsequently, the pre-sorting takes place according to size and colour: not by machine, but again exclusively by hand. Finally, all nuts that are actually suitable for trade are roasted in special ovens at 120 degrees for about 20 minutes and then vacuum-packed.

A fat content of approx. 75 percent makes the macadamia nut a very special food. About two thirds of the fat content consists of unsaturated fatty acids, which have a positive effect on health and the cardiovascular system. For example, if you are struggling with high cholesterol levels, you can significantly reduce your cholesterol level within a month by eating around ten macadamias a day. Macadamia nut is also a true source of protein: a quantity of one hundred grams contains 7.5 grams of vegetable protein. The amino acid arginine contained in macadamia nuts ensures healthy blood pressure because it has a positive effect on the muscles of our blood vessels. In addition, the power nuts have a high magnesium, phosphorus and calcium content and various B vitamins, which contribute to the strengthening of nerves and bones. The cosmetics industry has also discovered the power of the power nut: Since macadamia nuts have a high palmitic acid content, exclusive macadamia body oils are particularly beneficial for dry, sensitive or mature skin. And those who suffer from brittle, dry or dull hair can use a shampoo with the ingredients of the Australian beauty nut.

Macadamia nuts are characterised by their fine and at the same time intense taste, which comes up with various nuances – the spectrum ranges from buttery and sweetish to vanilla-like aromas. But the nuts are not only pure or salted a real feast for the palate, they can also be used in the kitchen in many ways. Cakes, biscuits, desserts or mueslis give the nuts a very special flavour. Macadamia nut is also used in exotic dishes. And meanwhile there is not only Macadamia bread spread, but also a fine oil, which is excellently suitable for roasting, baking and for salad dressings.
