A wheelchair is always needed when a person can no longer walk on their own. This may be necessary after an accident that restricts walking ability, but chronic diseases may also be the cause of the necessity. Often older people also need a wheelchair. These walking aids are mainly used in hospitals and nursing homes, but there are also numerous products for private use.

In principle, the various models of wheelchairs can be distinguished according to their comfort and the amount of force required to move them.
Standard wheelchairs are mostly used in hospitals and other inpatient facilities. These are rather heavy and only equipped with the most important functions – therefore they are not suitable for permanent operation. Due to the high weight, these models cannot usually be operated by the patient himself, which is why the patient has to be pushed by a caregiver or a relative. These products offer only limited individualization and the lowest comfort of the models available on the market.
As the name suggests, lightweight wheelchairs are much lighter and therefore easier to handle. The patient who is dependent on this walking aid can partly move the model himself and is therefore much less restricted. However, the effort required for independent movement by the patient is still relatively high, which also makes long-term use strenuous.
The so-called active wheelchairs are regarded as a modern alternative. These are characterised by a particularly individual adaptation to the patient: The seat height, for example, can be perfectly adjusted here. The amount of force required for independent movement is thus minimal, giving the patient a great deal of freedom of movement. Although these products are usually very expensive, they are worthwhile for long-term use.
Positioning wheelchairs are used for patients suffering from multiple severe disabilities. These have a separate head section that keeps the patient’s head upright and allows a certain amount of freedom of movement even for non-mobile persons.
Many of these wheelchairs can only be used over long distances if the walking aid is pushed by a second person. This means less effort for the patient, but also creates dependency – absolutely self-determined locomotion is only possible over short distances.
Light and manoeuvrable wheelchairs can also be operated by the patient himself by turning the wheels with both hands or – for example during amputations – with one hand. Many wheelchair users feel more comfortable in these models, as it is difficult for patients, especially after sudden accidents, to rely on the help of another person to such an extent. This type of drive therefore provides significantly more self-determination.
In the case of severely handicapped people, electric wheelchairs are often used which the patient can operate himself. These models are usually very expensive, but offer the wheelchair user a very high level of comfort and also ensure that he is no longer so dependent on outside help.
The cost of a wheelchair can range up to 7,000 euros for modern and complex models. Health insurance companies often only pay for standard or lightweight wheelchairs or subsidise the purchase with only a fraction of the purchase price.
