The bicycle side stand is a small and inconspicuous component which – as its name suggests – is attached to the side of the two-wheeler. Which side that is depends on the preferences of the cyclist. The stand can be mounted on both sides. The side stands are folded up during the ride and have no influence on the riding characteristics of the two-wheeler. Only when the bicycle is to be parked, for example, in the supermarket or bakery, is the side stand folded out with the foot and the two-wheeler leaned on its side until it stands securely.
There are basically two different versions of the side stand. The classic version is attached to the rear of the bike with a few screws. It is primarily used for light and sporty two-wheelers, which do not have a plate in the middle of the frame to attach a stand. For heavier e-bikes, mountain bikes and city bicycles, the middle stand is the preferred choice. It is screwed to this middle plate and usually offers the bicycle a somewhat more secure stand. However, the application of the two variants does not differ from each other. Both can be easily retrofitted.
When buying a side stand, it is important to choose the right size for the bike. Most stands can be mounted on bicycles of different frame sizes and adjusted in height if necessary. In these cases it is advisable to pay attention to the maximum possible load when purchasing a stand and to choose a model that meets the individual requirements. This is the only way to ensure the stability of the two-wheeler at all times.
The end pieces of the bicycle stand are also decisive for stability. They usually consist of a hard plastic or rubber. Rubber models often offer better grip and prevent the bike from slipping when parked. It is also advantageous if the rubber parts can be easily replaced with new ones if necessary, because these parts wear out very quickly during frequent parking.
