Car Parts & Accessories: Sealing compound Video Guide

The term sealing compound describes all substances and materials that are used to seal joints or gaps in sanitary areas or in construction. Sealing compound can consist of different materials and can therefore be used for very different applications. Sealing compound plays an important role especially in damp rooms or in the sealing of windows and doors and serves the energy-efficient and resource-saving heating of rooms as well as the avoidance of moisture damage in masonry. The sealing of small cracks and joints is the main application of sealing compound and requires that the compound adheres to the substrate and the edges of the gap. Unlike sealing rings, sealing compounds must be self-adhesive and do not act through pressure and counterpressure, but through their self-adhesive properties.

The function of sealing compound is derived directly from the name. It is a compound with a homogeneous structure used to seal small cracks, joints and crevices in handicrafts, construction and home use. Sealing compound can be used either to level a surface or to prevent water leakage, as well as to smooth substrates as a preliminary to surface treatment. Their aim is to seal and smooth, level and eliminate the risks of dripping water and, for example, prevent heat escaping through the smallest joints and cracks. Sealing compound is used for the installation of windows or doors as well as for the cladding of bathtubs and sanitary facilities, for the installation of showers or the sealing of pipes in wall inlets. In the past, sealing compound was also applied around pipe connections, thus creating a basis for ensuring that the connections do not allow dripping water to pass through and that, for example, the sink base unit in the kitchen remains dry. Today, gaskets are used for this purpose, so that the sealing compound is primarily used in construction and for sealing sanitary facilities. Sealing compound can be permanently homogeneous or drying and curing.

Due to its practical properties and easy processing, sealing compound is a popular aid in construction and trade. It can be distributed in the desired quantity in all joints or cracks and crevices, can harden depending on its properties or remain permanently in its homogeneous state. Today, sealing compound is rarely applied by hand or with a special spatula. From the tube, a sufficiently long strip can be applied to the surface and then smoothed with a spatula. If used correctly, the use of sealing compound proves to be free of disadvantages, as these occur exclusively when the compound is incorrectly selected or when applied to damp and greasy substrates. Here the sealing compound can loosen and stand in the way of the actual effect, the sealing of joints or cracks.

High quality is important in any case and should be at the top of the agenda when buying sealant. No less important, however, is the right choice based on the substrate and the purpose for which the sealant is to be used. Depending on the application, you can choose a sealing compound in a tube and apply it with a silicone gun. Alternatively, sealing compounds are available for manual application. Evaluations from other buyers are helpful and guide the decision in the right direction, so that the chosen sealing compound also corresponds to the intention of the application and creates sealing.
