Every motorist knows the need to renew or even completely change the engine oil from time to time. But what this is really needed for, most drivers do not really know.

Engine oil also serves as rust protectionThe engine oil also serves as rust protection, many car owners may be less aware. But this is exactly the case, but only if sufficient engine oil surrounds the parts. This is the only way to protect them against possible ingress of air, which in turn prevents corrosion. If these parts are constantly surrounded by sufficient engine oil, corrosion is ruled out, which in turn means a long service life for the car. This is so important because no fitting parts can be manufactured so accurately that dust or air cannot penetrate the gaps. But exactly these small dust particles can damage parts in the engine, with which a perfect operation is no longer possible. The engine oil can penetrate precisely into these spaces and prevent such damage. However, it is not only air and dust that threaten an engine with failure, but also the combustion process. This can result in tiny particles that can settle in the engine without engine oil. Worse still, such particles can damage the entire transmission and the car is no longer ready to drive. A good engine oil absorbs these particles and thus reliably cleans the entire engine. This cleaning takes place above all at inaccessible places in the engine, which in turn is very practical and efficient. For this reason, a regular oil change is also important, because old engine oil causes more damage than it is useful for.

Car Parts & Accessories: Engine oil Video Guide

Lubricating and cooling at the same timeThis is the primary task of engine oil, the main task being to protect moving and interlocking parts. This lubrication considerably reduces wear, and these engine parts are protected by a permanent lubricating film. This is only possible because the parts never touch each other directly. The friction caused by the oil is also known as fluid friction. But not only the protection of the engine parts is an important task that the engine oil performs. Rather, constant friction also generates heat, which is prevented by the engine oil alone. Thus, the parts maintain a temperature that prevents overheating. The oil absorbs the heat and then cools down again in the cooling tank. This heat is then released into the environment or, in certain cases, converted into energy.

Change engine oil regularlyThis is familiar to every motorist, but many are already overtaxed before the change. Because which is now the best engine oil, because here there are nevertheless some differences. All oils consist of base oils and additives, and a further distinction is made between mineral oils and synthetic oils. Mineral oil is much cheaper than synthetic oil, which has its good reasons. Here the production is an important component, because mineral oil is much simpler here. Synthetic oil has on the one hand better properties and on the other hand the production is more complicated and therefore more expensive. In the case of mineral oil, crude oil is simply refined and then processed, with synthetic oils containing only the linear molecules. These do not occur in this way in natural crude oil, whereby hydrocarbon compounds also occur here which are already contained in the oil. Synthetic oils are therefore much better for the engine, especially as they can do their job longer. As a rule, these engine oils are more expensive to purchase, but their long service life justifies the price. Of course the normal engine oils do their job excellently, but here the oil change must be done more frequently. It is often enough to simply top up the oil, but this only works for a certain period of time. No matter if normal engine oil or synthetic oil, at some point it has to be changed completely. Already the color alone can indicate a change here, because this changes in the color. It’s best not to wait long here, but to act immediately. Nobody wants to lose his car through bad engine oil, so the exchange is much cheaper. If you decide to use synthetic engine oil, you may have to adjust your oil filters accordingly. As a rule, this oil lasts longer, which is lacking in filters.
