Deflection pulleys are used in many areas, for example in rescue services. A deflection pulley consists of a circular disc or a wheel and an axle. The sheave is used to guide the chain or rope. When used, a rolling movement takes place between the chain or rope and the wheel. A small bar attached to the edge of the disc prevents the chain from slipping off. A deflection pulley can be used as a compensating element, to guide the rope and to change the direction of the tensile force. Especially large deflection pulleys are called rope sheaves. They are used in ropeways and winding towers. In seafaring, sheaves with their housings are called blocks. Classic applications for deflection pulleys are cranes, pulleys and lifts.

The various manufacturers therefore offer deflection pulleys in different variants. The various types of deflection pulley are auxiliary pulleys, auxiliary pulleys and load rollers.
The auxiliary rolls are characterised by the lowest weight and the most compact dimensions. The breaking load of a temporary roll is therefore only low. Auxiliary castors have been designed for occasional use in emergency and other exceptional situations and are unsuitable for continuous use.
Auxiliary rollers are usually equipped with plastic components and therefore have a low dead weight. However, they are more susceptible to breakage than conventional deflection rollers.
Load rollers have the highest dead weight and are considerably more robust than auxiliary and auxiliary rollers. They have the highest breaking load. Deflection rollers that are to be used as load rollers are usually made of aluminium or steel. These pulleys are the most commonly used.
There are further differences in the bearings with which a deflection pulley is equipped. A distinction is made between disc and ball bearings. As a rule, the higher the quality of the bearing, the larger the roller diameter and the physical efficiency of the idler pulley. The physical efficiency indicates how smoothly the deflection pulley in question moves. In climbing, for example, the higher the physical efficiency, the easier the rope glides. The abrasion is also all the lower. For this reason, pulleys with rope bearings should generally be preferred when climbing with pulley bearings. In order to guarantee a high level of comfort, additional care must be taken to ensure that the roller diameter is correct. The diameter of the deflection pulley should be four times the circumference of the rope.
The most important characteristic values that must be taken into account when selecting a pulley are efficiency, breaking values, weight and rope diameter. Another important criterion in the selection of the new pulley is the intended use of the product. There can be enormous differences between a tandem pulley, such as the Alpidex Tandem Pulley Power 2.0 rope pulley, and a single pulley, such as the Nordstrand deflection pulley. It must also be considered whether the deflection roller is a model with an integrated backstop such as the Micro Traxion, Yellow, P53 from Petzl or a Prus Micro roller. Rotating discs are practical because they make it much easier to attach snap hooks. Which pulley is the ideal, however, always depends on the intended use of the product.
For example, if you want to design a pulley block, you need a fixed and a loose pulley. The fixed pulley is attached to a wall, while the loose pulley is carried by the rope.
In some industries, pulleys are an essential part of employees’ personal safety equipment. A pulley to be used for this purpose must comply with standard EN 12278. The UIAA 127 standard is also applied to pulleys used for climbing. This standard stipulates that the deflection pulley must have a breakage value of at least 15 kilograms; most of the pulleys offered clearly exceed this minimum value.
