Epoxy adhesives consist of two components: resin and hardener. Polymer building blocks are used for the epoxy resin, which carry so-called epoxy groups. These are mostly reaction products of epichlorohydrin and bisphenol-A. After mixing with the hardener, which consists of mercapto or amino groups, these form a stable thermosetting plastic. The epoxy adhesive can be cured at room temperature and higher. Higher temperatures usually result in better strength of the epoxy adhesive. Due to its high strength, this adhesive is often used for structural bonding, e.g. in aircraft or vehicle construction. However, there are also single-component epoxy adhesives whose components, hardener and resin, are already mixed in the optimum ratio during production. In this case, hardeners (e.g. dicyndiamide) are used which do not react so quickly at room temperature and therefore have to be hardened hot. Some epoxy adhesives can also be deep frozen to increase their limited shelf life.

This can only be removed mechanically and interferes with the subsequent painting process.6 Basically, epoxy adhesives are suitable for spot welding in automotive construction, but their welding penetration capacity decreases with the addition of glass beads. In addition, the adhesive can burn when exposed to high temperatures.7. Particularly in crash-relevant areas, e.g. doors, sills or engine mounts, the epoxy adhesive must have a high static strength and retain this under extreme dynamic loads. This strength is also known under the terms notched impact strength, impact strength or toughness. A special chemical structure in the cured epoxy adhesive can achieve this impact strength. This can be, for example, a reactive thermoplastic in the formulation of the adhesive. If an abrupt load occurs and this additive is not present in the adhesive, the epoxy adhesive may fail and the deformation energy is no longer absorbed properly by the bonded component.
