DIY articles: Emergency generator Video Guide

The first confrontation of early mankind with electricity was probably caused by natural lightning during a thunderstorm. Over the next 200,000 years or so, further findings followed until the Greek natural philosopher Thales von Miletus, 600 B.C., became interested in electrostatic charging. The era of serial power generation in Germany began in 1866 thanks to Werner von Siemens.

Since 1925, we have been living in the modern electric age and increasingly have facilities and equipment that we can operate with electricity, such as telephone systems, lighting, hotplates and drills. As a rule, there are enough sockets available in one’s own house and garden as well as in companies and on construction sites, so that any number of electrical consumers can be connected at any time. But even today there are of course still areas and situations where no electrical installations are available or existing systems can fail!

In order to provide the required and usual 230 Volt alternating current, a separate power generator can also be used. These aggregates consist of a combustion engine, which in turn drives a power generator. Depending on the type, petrol or diesel is used as fuel, whereby the petrol engine is preferably installed in the smaller power generators. These are often mobile devices that are used in garden sheds, forest areas or disaster control, for example. This can then be used to operate refrigerators, lamps and pumps

In many important areas, stationary and powerful generating sets are often installed to maintain power supply in the event of a public grid failure. These large devices are often operated with diesel fuel, which is also a better choice for explosion-proof versions than petrol. Such emergency power generators are even required by law for certain buildings, such as hospitals, power stations and high-rise buildings, in order to keep the safety-relevant equipment operational in the event of a power failure. Today, server systems and data centers are also critical areas that must be reliably supplied with power around the clock.

Particularly for use in remote areas, the quality of these devices should be taken into account, as in the event of technical faults there are often no alternatives available. Also the performance and the suitable equipment should correspond to the intended purpose. In most cases, the drives are designed as Otto four-stroke motors, have an output of between approximately 3 and 14 KW and offer several 230 V protective contact sockets as well as three-phase connections. Recommended products for mobile use are for example the following models:
1. The model WESTCRAFT WK-950W is a good and cheap unit. The 2-stroke engine is relatively quiet at 62 db and with a total weight of 17 kilograms, this small emergency generator can still be transported without great effort. It is a good choice for sporadic use for private purposes.
2. The EBERTH 5500 Watt power generation unit has already been designed for professional and longer use and is equipped with an electric starter. As outputs this 4-stroke offers 12, 230 and 400 volts and guarantees a continuous operation of about 10 hours with one tank filling

For regular and demanding electrical work, for example in road construction, diesel-powered emergency power generators are the better choice. As known from car engines, these drives have high torques at low speeds and are superior to petrol engines in terms of consumption and service life. The Güde GSE 5500 DSG power generator is a robust diesel model and also suitable for mobile use. Thanks to the stable transport wheels, its 155 kilograms can still be moved easily and the maximum output of 7350 watts guarantees smooth continuous operation for all connected electrical appliances.
