DIY articles: Fire extinguishers Video Guide

Fire extinguishers are usually divided into three different classes:

There is no fire extinguisher that can be used universally to help with any burning material. For domestic heating, the foam, powder and fat fire extinguishers (ABC extinguishers) already mentioned in the above paragraph have proven to be the optimum solution. These models are not only extremely effective, but also very easy to use. They are particularly suitable when liquids or solids catch fire, as is often the case, for example, with domestic fires. However, these variants are not suitable for quick and safe extinguishing of metal fires. Fire extinguishers of the ABC family are also capable of extinguishing gas fires. However, this deletion process requires a certain amount of experience on the part of the user.

Foam extinguishers in detail: In these models, the foam is literally shot out of the fire extinguisher hose under moderate pressure, cooling the surface of the fire and suffocating the flames. The so-called Light-Water (AFFF) is usually used as a foaming agent. These devices are quick to use and easy to operate, so that even an inexperienced user can easily handle a foam extinguisher. However, foam extinguishers are somewhat more expensive than classic powder extinguishers.

Powder extinguishers in detail: These fire extinguishers are somewhat cheaper than the other variants. The disadvantage of these devices, however, is reflected in the fact that the leaking extinguishing powder in your home may cause significant damage. Therefore, it makes sense to use powder extinguishers only in outdoor areas, such as garages or cellars. In contrast to foam extinguishers, these devices are fully functional even at temperatures around the minus point.

Fat fire extinguishers in detail: Fat fire extinguishers have a special field of application. These are primarily used for fat fires, which can occur in the kitchen or during barbecuing, for example. An extinguishing attempt with a foam extinguisher would be potentially life-threatening in such a situation. Powder extinguishers can also have little effect in the event of a grease fire.

Fire extinguishers differ in the process by which the required pressure for the extinguishing process is generated. In this context, a distinction is made between two different variants. With the so-called “charge extinguishers” several chambers are used, in which the propellant and extinguishing agent are located. In the case of “permanent pressure release valves”, on the other hand, both substances are stored in a common pressure vessel. Fire extinguishers based on the charging principle are much more expensive to purchase, but require less maintenance. There are also a number of criteria to be taken into account when determining the filling quantity of the fire extinguisher. Fire extinguishers with a capacity of 6 litres are particularly popular as they are easy to operate due to their low weight. However, the 12-litre variants also allow relatively convenient handling, while heavy equipment beyond the 16-litre mark should only be handled by professionals.
