A fishing line is sometimes exposed to very high loads. It is not always (exclusively) about the weight of the fish that has just bitten. In addition, the fishing line can slip over angular stones, get caught in plants or be exposed to direct sunlight for long periods of time. This means that you need a sturdy, durable fishing line to enjoy fishing for a long time. This guide provides valuable information and tips for buying a high-quality model!

A basic distinction is made between monofilament and polyofilament fishing lines. Monofilament means that the cord is made of one (single) polyamide thread. On the other hand, in a polyfilament fishing line many extremely thin and extremely hard threads (usually Coramid or Dyneema threads) are intertwined. For this reason, one finds this type frequently also under the designation “braided fishing line”. Please note that a monofilament fishing line must be used: The thicker the string, the higher the load-bearing capacity. Interesting: Polyfile fishing lines achieve better values in terms of load-bearing capacity with much smaller diameters. However, the thin threads are also significantly more sensitive to abrasion – they can therefore tear more easily under extreme loads. In addition, polyfile fishing lines are generally much more expensive than monofilament models.
Advantages of the monofilament fishing line:
– almost transparent (hardly visible to fish)- high abrasion resistance- long shelf life- high knot strength- very inexpensive- suitable for: short throws (spot fishing), strong wind
– expands rapidly – high load-bearing capacity only with large diameter
– high carrying capacity (with smallest diameter)- low elongation- enormous softness (flexibility)- suitable for: long throws (big fish fishing)
– better visible for fish – lower abrasion resistance – high costs
Tip: When deciding on a monofilament or polyfile fishing line, it is probably best to try it out by studying it. It is best to test both models several times under the same conditions in order to find out which variant best suits your individual requirements and wishes. Attention: If you tie your leader lines yourself, you will inevitably need a monofilament fishing line due to the high knot strength (tip on the edge: The leader line should be very elastic in order to be able to absorb shocks caused by the fish well).
Relatively small price differences can be seen with monofilament fishing lines. Some manufacturers like to point out special innovations in their models. Nevertheless, polyamide remains polyamide – and the properties of the material and thus of the fishing lines made from it cannot be fundamentally changed. The only exception: there are monofilament versions with Teflon sealing. This seal makes the fishing line more durable.
