THE feed for horses does not existEvery horse makes different demands on the feeding and it is advisable to actually take these individual demands into account for the horse’s health. The basis for feeding should always be good quality roughage such as hay and good feed straw. In summer the horse can be given grass by grazing. When grazing, care should be taken to gradually accustom the horse to the grass in the spring and to adjust the length of time on the paddock to the figure in the case of overweight horses. Some factors should be taken into account. Feed for overweight horsesThe majority of leisure horses are not used very much and the supplementary feed should be adapted accordingly. In principle, the additional feeding of a concentrated feed is really necessary in the rarest cases. Nevertheless, many horse owners use supplementary feed as a small reward or to prevent feed envy. Since many of these horses tend to be overweight and as a result can develop affluent diseases, a sugar- and starch-reduced supplementary feed should therefore be chosen. Many manufacturers offer feed for horses with “affluence disorders” such as diabetes, Cushing’s or horses that already suffer from laminitis. This feed can of course also be fed to healthy horses. These feeds have a high volume, but a very low energy density and primarily occupy the horse and provide it with less energy. Puritan from Höveler or Equigard from St. Hippolyt would be possible products. Horses with special requirements for feeding old and sick horses as well as competitive athletes have very special requirements for feeding concentrated feed. Older horses often have problems gaining weight and chewing. In such cases the additional feeding of haycobs or meadowcobs such as Agrobs is recommended. This means that older horses can be fed the vital amount of roughage without much effort. Not only old but also sick horses may have to be fed again after an illness. Gastric ulcers or colics often lead to emaciation, but at the same time the demands on the selected feed are high. Beet escalopes with linseed oil are particularly suitable for feeding horses with stomach problems. For horses with a history of colic or even colic surgery, feeding Mash is often recommended. Mash is very gentle on the stomach and stimulates digestion and can be fed to any horse as it is beneficial for the stomach and intestines. Because performance horses have a higher energy requirement than leisure horses, because they are comparable to competitive athletes in humans. Despite feeding roughage 24 hours a day, in most cases they cannot sufficiently cover their energy requirements and therefore require supplementary feed. The feeding of oats is used predominantly for this purpose. A combination with oil, electrolytes, magnesium, vitamin E for the musculature and herbs, which relieve the metabolism, is recommended. Use of feed additivesConcentrated feed can also be supplemented with a good mineral feed. If you want to do without concentrated feed completely, you can use the “Semper Cubes” from St. Hippolyt or “Mineral Brikks” from Höveler, for example, to cover your horse’s nutritional requirements. Other manufacturers also offer mineral food in the form of small chunks, which can be fed easily from the hand. When changing the coat, linseed oil or flakes can also be fed to give the horse a little more energy for this time. If the horse needs certain herbs due to liver problems or coughing, for example, the company Nösenberger offers specially adapted herbs. In these cases, however, it is advisable to discuss the feeding with the veterinarian or even to prepare a blood count and adjust the feeding accordingly.
