In the case of an LED monitor, a distinction must be made between different lighting methods which influence the image quality. The most common and at the same time the more favorable form of an LED monitor is the one in which the display and the tubes are illuminated from the edge. Such an LED monitor is also called an edge monitor. The positioning of the LEDs in this case allows a very flat design, with a housing depth of up to one centimetre, as well as the so-called full LED technology, also known as LED Pro. The LEDs of such monitors are located directly behind the pixels. For this reason, they can be controlled more selectively. However, this does not mean that there is an LED behind each pixel. Rather, the screen consists of several areas of the same size, each of which is illuminated by an LED. This method of illumination enables better illumination of the entire monitor surface. Such a LED monitor owes a better black display to the fact that the diodes can be completely switched off or dimmed. This prevents the light from shining through. On the other hand, such monitors can also have individual darkened areas because a group of LEDs is always dimmed. Such LED monitors achieve the highest contrast value and the strongest color reproduction. In contrast to Edge monitors, however, they are somewhat more expensive and not so flat in design.

One distinguishes the LEDs not only according to their position, but also according to their type. A distinction is made between RGB and white diodes. While the white diodes light up exclusively in white, the RGB diodes enable the representation of primary colours red, green and blue. Monitors with white diodes need color filters for this. The LED monitors with RGB diodes have a better image display, but are also significantly more expensive.

This is measured in candela. The higher the specification, the better the image quality. 200 candela are considered sufficient for a good picture. The contrast should be at least 350 to 1. The term dynamic contrast, however, refers to the distance between the brightest set pixel and the darkest set pixel at different times. Otherwise, a small viewing angle does not necessarily mean something negative. Because if there are several people in the room and you don’t want the contents of the screen to be recognized by the next table, it’s better to choose a smaller viewing angle. If you don’t really care, you should make sure that the viewing angle comes as close as possible to 180 degrees. This is because it represents the maximum value both horizontally and vertically.
