Street hockey was developed after the model of ice hockey and was played for a long time particularly by children and young people on the street. They emulated their ice hockey role models and used baseball or tennis balls and conventional ice hockey sticks for their games. In the meantime, street hockey fans no longer have to make do with makeshift clubs and balls, because there is a large selection of high-quality items on the market, including special balls and goals as well as street hockey clubs in particular. Optically they resemble conventional ice hockey sticks with a long grip and a curved trowel. However, it has a slightly different abrasion resistance, since street hockey is played on hard surfaces such as concrete or asphalt. There are also slight differences in flexibility. Streethockey rackets can be bought individually or as a set. These sets, which are offered in different versions, are particularly recommended for beginners. Usually two or more rackets as well as several balls are included in the scope of delivery and occasionally two goals can also be included.

When wood is used, the shaft and trowel are usually made of the same material. The advantage here is in particular the lower purchase price, but on the other hand these clubs are usually noticeably heavier and have a higher stiffness. If the trowel is damaged, it cannot simply be replaced for wooden clubs and a new club is due to be purchased. In composite rackets, damaged trowels can often be easily replaced. Due to the better flexibility, these specimens usually also offer a longer service life. Composite is a modern composite material consisting of two or more materials. The material properties of this composite usually differ significantly from the properties of the individual components. Hockey sticks often use material components such as Kevlar or carbon. Composite rackets are lighter and easier to handle. In general, wood mallets are less recommended for street hockey despite their lower price, as they can splinter more easily and the protective lacquer layer can be quickly damaged by contact with rough asphalt. Moisture in these areas can more easily penetrate the wood and cause long-term damage.

First and foremost, the player’s height is decisive for the selection of the right street hockey club. Generally, rackets are available in the two standard sizes Junior and Senior. Junior clubs are lighter, thinner and slightly more flexible than senior clubs. Depending on the manufacturer, the shaft length can vary from 116 cm to 138 cm, making them ideal for children and teenagers. The Senior rackets, on the other hand, were designed for adults and have shaft lengths of between 140 cm and 158 cm, depending on the manufacturer. For beginners, it may be a good idea to start with a junior racket as it is easier to handle. The side on which the trowel is guided is also decisive. A club marked “L” is therefore selected when the trowel is inserted on the left side and a street hockey club marked “R” is ideal on the right side. These two letters (L & R) indicate the bending direction of the trowel. Depending on the design, the curve and the angle of the trowel also vary. For beginners, a street hockey club with a low angle and low bend is recommended. A further selection criterion is the flexibility of the club, as it significantly influences the power transmission as well as the control. Classification into different categories is based on the Stiff value. If it is low, the club offers high flexibility. Beginners should choose a medium stiffness racket (85 stiff) for better control.
