Subwoofers additionally amplify the bass of a sound system. There are active and passive subwoofers, and in 2016 the active version is the most frequently used. The subwoofer is connected to the mains and receives a music signal for playback. An active subwoofer is an excellent way to retrofit a music system. A crossover is used to adjust the proportion of lower frequencies the subwoofer reproduces, which in turn allows it to be adapted to the listening habits and acoustic characteristics of a room.

Audio & Hifi: Subwoofer Video Guide

Those who have a rather average home stereo system and also watch films on a big screen with a beamer will definitely be happy with a subwoofer. For the domestic use offers under 200 euro can be sufficient already. But if you want to upgrade an already high quality equipment even further, you should dig a little deeper into your pocket. A subwoofer really makes the difference when it comes to movies with a lot of action and corresponding noises or musical background, because the deep, voluminous bass is the foundation of every sound. Upgrading a stereo system can begin with a single active subwoofer that is later integrated into a surround setup. The low frequencies from 25 to about 50 Hertz do not reproduce normal speakers or only unsatisfactorily. But it is the “palpable” frequencies (the sound pressure is physically noticeable) that are so important for a good sound.

Subwoofers are loudspeakers that are optimized to reproduce the lowest frequencies. This includes a certain volume, because a certain amount of air has to be moved for the basses. The membranes must also reach a certain size (from 16 cm diameter) and allow a large stroke (movement space of the membrane). This is the only way to reproduce bass frequencies strongly enough. Subwoofers are electronically equipped with crossovers that ensure that the desired bass frequencies are accurately reproduced.

Of course, most subwoofers have advantages, especially since they are very inexpensive to buy at home. With a stake of 100 or 150 euros, you can be sure that the living room will be an aha experience if you have an average stereo system. But there are also small disadvantages. The advantages would be:

– much more intense listening experience to music and movies- easy to install (especially the active version)- inexpensive to purchase- can be the first component of a surround system- can often be connected to other speakers and systems

– perfect adjustment requires a lot of time – can disturb the neighbours – additional power consumer

There are active and passive subwoofers. Active subwoofers are perfectly suited for uncomplicated retrofitting. All you need to do is connect a cable from the signal source (hi-fi system, receiver) to the subwoofer, which draws power from its own mains cable and has its own power amplifier, so that the performance of the hi-fi system is irrelevant. The passive subwoofer that is rarely used today must receive its signal from a suitable amplifier with the right power and impedance. Passive subwoofers are suitable for very specific configurations such as home cinema or gaming.

What should interested parties pay attention to when buying a subwoofer? Well, first of all the decision between active or passive subwoofer has to be made, whereby the passive design only makes sense if it is expressly recommended by experts for the upgrade of a home cinema system, for example. Otherwise all buyers can buy an active subwoofer. This should have the right output – suitable for the system. As a rule of thumb, the subwoofer can easily double the total power of a hi-fi system (i.e. a total of 40 watts at two 20 watts stereo) – in this case up to 80 watts subwoofer power would be appropriate. It can also be 100 watts without the ratio appearing unbalanced. The real power is always given in watts, details such as music or PMPO power are not particularly helpful. There are several features in customizability: The phase switch Adjusts to spatial characteristics, the variable crossover frequency defines the emitted bass frequencies, the low-frequency effects channel (LFE channel) only directs the bass-relevant components of the audio signal to the subwoofer, clipping is a protective circuit that automatically cuts off harmful levels.
