A water bottle is a transportable liquid container made of unbreakable material. To prevent these drinking bottles from leaking, they have a robust closure. To prevent loss of the closure, it is often attached to the water bottle with a loop. A shoulder strap, a carrying bag or even a belt clip makes transport uncomplicated. Most bottles have a capacity of between half a litre and a full litre of liquid. This is certainly sufficient for a short excursion. For longer tours without a secure supply of drinking water, several water bottles should be carried per person. Whether you opt for a version made of plastic, aluminium or stainless steel, there is no big difference in functionality and weight. Plastic bottles are very light and mostly transparent. The fill level and cleanliness of the water bottle can thus be checked at a glance. It is important that the closure is really tight so that the valuable water cannot leak out on the way.

Bottles are available in different configurations. Most bottles have a cover, which can be made of various materials: Polyester, felt or even nylon are common variants. A field bottle cover made of smooth or suede leather looks stylish and a little quaint. Some sleeves have a thermo function: hot things stay hot and cool things stay pleasantly cold. Such canteens are ideal for carrying not only water, but also tea, coffee or a hot broth. Depending on the quality of the cover, the desired temperature can be maintained for several hours. Optionally there is a special thermal cover for some water bottles, which can be ordered separately. By the way: Hot-filled water bottles can be used as hot water bottles on cold nights if necessary. The cover is usually fastened with practical snap fasteners. The spout of the water bottle remains free so that it can be used easily at any time. Many canteens have one or two small outer pockets where important small items can be safely stored. In addition to the practical shoulder strap, many sleeves also feature a clip that allows easy attachment to a belt, waistband or backpack. So before you buy, consider how you want to transport your water bottle and pay attention to the appropriate equipment features.

Some canteens are sold as a set. In addition to the bottle and the matching cover, a cup made of stainless steel or aluminum and sometimes a bottle base are included in the delivery. The bottle can be placed vertically on the base. There are also saucers that can be placed under a metal field cup to heat liquids in it, which can then be filled into the water bottle. The field cup itself often has a fold-out handle. Such cups facilitate the consumption of hot drinks, which cannot be drunk directly from the bottle due to the heat.

A used water bottle should be rinsed thoroughly with hot water after each tour and cleaned with a little detergent. The larger the diameter of the opening, the easier it is to clean the water bottle. If necessary, a narrow dishwashing brush with horizontal bristles can be used. The water bottle should always be stored with the closure open.
