How do I find the right desktop computer? Basically, desktop computers can be divided into two groups in terms of equipment and performance: In office/multimedia PCs and gaming PCs. So before you buy, you should think about which user group you belong to. Office-/Multimedia Desktop PCThese models score with their low purchase price. They are suitable for simple office applications and have the classic features. Due to their performance characteristics, they are suitable for Excel and Word applications as well as for chatting and surfing the Internet. Sets consisting of a monitor, printer and desktop PC are also popular in this segment. However, these models are not suitable for demanding applications such as gaming. Gaming Desktop PCEin Gaming PC must be especially powerful so that games with sophisticated graphics can run without jolts or delays. The focus here is therefore on high graphics performance. These models often lack a WLAN module for this, but there are also reasons for this. Gamers prefer the classic LAN cable as this ensures a reliable Internet connection. Due to their high performance, these PCs are also suitable for simple Office and Photoshop applications. Based on the technical specifications, these models are in the higher-priced segment. What to look out for when buying a desktop computer – ProcessorThe heart of a PC is the processor. Usually processors from AMD or Intel are used for common desktop PCs. There are processors with a different number of cores to choose from. Dual-Core stands for 2 cores and Quad-Core for 4 cores. More cores also means more power. A dual-core processor is sufficient for standard office desktop PCs. Gaming PCs already require significantly more power and are predominantly equipped with an Octa Core processor. – Hard disk and RAMThe hard disk stores all data from photos, videos, programs to games. Depending on the type of user, the hard disk space may have to be smaller or larger. A distinction is also made here between HDD and SSD hard disks. The HDD variant is more common and offers more memory than SSD disks, whereas the SSD variant has a better access time. For normal users, a hard disk capacity of 320 to 500 gigabytes is perfectly sufficient. For gaming PCs, the hard disk should already have 1,000 gigabytes and more. The RAM in a gaming desktop PC should be at least 6 to 8 gigabytes and ideally 16 to 32 GB DDR3 RAM. An office PC needs considerably less. Here 6 gigabytes are perfectly sufficient. – ConnectionsThe basic configuration of a desktop computer should include connections in the form of HDMI and VGA ports. With an HDMI connection, the PC can be connected to a TV, for example. Important ports also include multiple USB 3.0 ports so external devices such as mice, keyboards, scanners and printers can be easily connected. The more USB ports, the better. – Graphics cardSpecial attention should always be paid to the graphics card. Here you can choose between soldered graphics chips or graphics units that are integrated into the processor. You shouldn’t expect too much from these variants. Desktop PCs with this type of graphics card are suitable only for simple office applications and by no means for demanding multimedia applications such as online games. They are also referred to as onboard graphics cards. The low performance is due to the fact that the onboard graphics card has to share the RAM with the operating system. This quickly leads to a loss of speed. Those who nevertheless choose this variant should make sure that the selected model accesses its own memory of at least 256 megabytes. For gamers, it should always be a separate graphics card, preferably models from well-known manufacturers such as the Nvidia GeForce GTX or an AMD Radeon HD. These cards guarantee the playback of games and video sequences at the highest graphic level.
