The actual inkjet printer is a CIJ: A Continuous Ink Jet, i.e. a real inkjet printer. Such ink jet printers send a continuous jet of ink onto a surface, a system deciding which of the drops are relevant to the desired result. The rest is reintegrated into the continuous ink flow circuit and reused. A printer that requires such a complex technology is naturally not to be found in private households. Through this simple procedure, DoD printers are the variant that have conquered offices and private living spaces. DoD printers have the great advantage of being relatively inexpensive when it comes to certain applications. No one can create a business card with a colored font or background more cheaply than the owner of a DoD printer. The fact that the quality of the prints does not correspond to that of a professional agency is self-explanatory. However, before the spread of inkjet printers, it was unthinkable that even primary school pupils would have their own business card, which used to be a privilege of the nobility and moneyed aristocracy.
The history of the inkjet printer goes back to the late 60s and early 70s of the last century, when Teletype Corporation created the first inkjet printer. For a long time, the dot matrix printer dominated the inkjet printer with its seemingly tangible and clattering controllability, especially since paper was expensive and it was not usual to print individual pages: Most companies only required long print-outs, which were of course cheaper to produce with a dot-matrix printer, while the rest of the correspondence was still done by hand. People also distrusted the machines and the dot matrix printer had the pleasant effect that it seemed little mysterious or even superior to humans. When in the 80s of the last century the PC made its way into the offices of the western world, the Japanese technology offensive had largely displaced the western manufacturers and Teletype Corporation was not able to accompany the triumphal march of inkjet printers. The dominant companies today in the field of inkjet printers for private use are Epson, Canon, HP as well as various suppliers of discount markets, behind which, however, products of the above-mentioned large manufacturers usually hide. What is offered for sale in the discount markets is usually a branded product without the corresponding guarantee of such a product and without the prestige that may accompany the ownership of a branded product for the buyer. For the near future, it is foreseeable that Chinese suppliers will put massive pressure on Japanese and American competitors, as plagiarism at lower prices is attracting interest worldwide.
The laser printer must be mentioned as a competitor of the inkjet printer in the office and in the home. The laser printer is superior to the inkjet printer in many respects: it is considerably quieter, it is considerably faster and its print image is free of irregularities which an inkjet printer likes to produce if it is not used frequently enough: The nozzles of the inkjet printer clog if they are not cleaned and the printer delivers smeared images. Laser printers are certainly more effective and reliable if the user just wants to print font. However, a color laser printer is still hardly affordable for private households. Inkjet printers have long since caught up and can also create high-quality images without expensive special paper. Although they are still not document proof, they are unrivalled in terms of price and absolutely sufficient for the needs of most households.
