Camping & Outdoor: Tick Video Guide

The cover of a duvet, which encloses the filling, is called the ticking in technical jargon. For many people, an inlet is a colloquial description of the complete duvet including filling. Strictly speaking, however, this is actually the pure cover fabric for duvets or eiderdowns. Basically, this envelope has to fulfil some important functions. On the one hand, it should prevent down or feathers from penetrating to the outside, but at the same time it must also ensure that even the smallest particles such as dust or skin flakes do not get inside. Nevertheless, an inlet must not be too dense so that moisture and air can still pass unhindered. When buying an inlet, consumers are best guided by the following rule of thumb: the softer the filling of the duvet should be, which is usually noticeable in a higher proportion of down, the finer should also be the quality of the inlet, because otherwise the beneficial properties of down and feathers can not be optimally accentuated

Inlets are divided into individual areas so that the filling cannot slip. Thanks to quilting, feathers and down work exactly where they are needed. This ultimately also saves filling material, so that the entire blanket is not quite as heavy as a comparable quilt without quilting. Cassette quilting (from Billerbeck, for example) has established itself particularly firmly on the market. The inlet is divided into individual cassettes or squares. Feathers and down are filled in such a way that they cannot slip out of the cassettes or squares. However, the two lengths of fabric must not simply be sewn together, otherwise cold bridges could form. Rather, the webs receive a web-like connection of fabric, which varies in height depending on the ticking. More and more the so-called sleep-fair body form quilting, which reminds optically a little of waves, is in the coming, however, also. Your advantage: the enormous adaptability to the individual body contours. The manufacturer Irisette offers some interesting new products in this context.

If the web height is about two centimetres, this results in quite flat cassettes, which offer relatively little space for the filling. As a result, such a duvet will also be rather thin: It is then mainly suitable for the warmer months in spring and summer. With a web height of up to ten centimetres, the whole thing looks different: In this case, the individual cassettes become so voluminous that a large quantity of feathers or down fits into them. The result is a very warming duvet that is perfect for the cold winter months.

Cotton is still the most common material for an inlet. No wonder, because the fabric has many good properties. It is skin-friendly, hard-wearing, durable and feels very pleasant to the touch. If a cotton ticking is filled with feathers or down, tiny air cushions form in between, which ensure that the duvet is optimally warm and the sleeper does not freeze. If you want to do without down and feathers and prefer a polyester filling, you can choose a microfibre upholstery fabric. This material is particularly soft and nestles perfectly to the body. Incidentally, inlets have been available in many different colours for years. In addition to the classics white and beige, blue and rosé also dominate in this area.
