When it comes to mountain bike components and their characteristics, MTB fans usually first think of features such as suspension forks, special brakes or carbon steering rods. A very central part that enables direct shoe contact with the bicycle is often neglected: the pedal. In addition to the handles, pedals are one of two contact points that have a decisive influence on the riding style and behaviour of the mountain bike.

Bicycle & E-Bikes: Mountainbike-Pedale Video Guide

The EU standard DIN EN 14766:2005, which was specially developed for mountain bikes, already places certain requirements on the pedals. Slip resistance is a prerequisite and must be guaranteed by certain materials and shapes. But not only legally, but also for the driving experience the right pedal choice is decisive. Especially in the MTB area, where often difficult trails have to be mastered, the pedals should prevent the shoes from gliding off the pedals even on small bumps or the knees from being excessively loaded when riding.

Basically you can distinguish between block pedals, bear paws (also called platform pedals or flats) and click pedals. Magnetic pedals are a more recent development. There are also combinations, such as bear paws with click mechanism or with metal pins. Block pedals are mainly used for simple bikes without sporty demands and magnetic pedals are not very common in the MTB world. Bear paws have their origin in the BMX sector and came to their name because of their shape, as their outwardly directed tips resemble a bear paw that clings to the sole. In regular street shoes, these pedals offer more grip, especially on soft soles where the metal tips can bury themselves. Injuries caused by slipping off the pedals are less likely than with normal block pedals. Bear paws are also fitted with metal pins on some pedals, making them suitable for disciplines such as downhill or freeride. Click pedals are directly connected to specially designed cycling shoes by a click mechanism. A distinction is made here between click systems for racing bikes and those for mountain bikes. With racing bikes, click systems allow an optimal power yield, as the pedal can also be pulled upwards. MTB click pedals, on the other hand, have smaller click mechanisms than road bike click systems, so that the rider can free himself more quickly from the click system in the event of a fall in the terrain and since the corresponding shoes are better suited for walking if the rider has to push his bike once in rough terrain.

There are also combination pedals that combine a bear paw and a click pedal. Each side has a different pedal type, so that they can be used with click shoes as well as with normal shoes.

Pedals have to endure a lot especially in mountain bike use, which is why it is not recommended to save quality at this point. For MTB use, either bear paws or clipless pedals are the main options. This is a question that is also the subject of controversial debate among experts, with both options having their advantages and disadvantages. Most professional racers prefer clipless pedals because of the more efficient energy transfer when pedaling. They prefer the fixed connection to the bike, but click pedals also stand in the way of some riding techniques. Bear paws, often also called flats, do not offer a particularly firm connection to the pedals. With some techniques, however, they contribute to their improvement, since for example when pedalling without ground contact, the bike must be more precisely balanced. Many users of such pedals also emphasize the greater driving pleasure of such pedals. In the end, the decision for a certain pedal type is a question of personal preference and can only be answered by an extensive individual pedal test.

The most popular platform pedals are the oftentimes comparative winner DMR Vault or the magnesium pedal Wellgo MG-1. The Shimano XT PD-M8020 and Mavic Crossmax XL proved to be particularly high quality in the clipless range of click pedals. Irrespective of the type of pedal, appropriate shoes should not be neglected, as they are the only way to make optimum use of the pedals. Click pedal shoes should have a harder sole for better power transmission. Ideal shoes for bear paws, on the other hand, have a softer, particularly grippy sole to ensure the best possible grip on the metal tips.
