The image sensor, which is considered the decisive factor in image quality, is similar in both cameras. Manufacturers usually rely on APS-C sensors or the Micro-Four-Thirds system. Large full-format sensors impress with their image quality, but these can almost only be found in the expensive professional SLR cameras. An exception among system cameras is Sony’s Alpha-7 series. The image quality hardly differs between system cameras and SLRs, even though many professional photographers still swear by DSLRs. Although there are differences mainly in the price classes, the system cameras have practically caught up. With the lenses and other accessories, the SLR cameras still score with a somewhat greater variety, but meanwhile, thanks to the exchangeable bayonet, lenses for all motifs can also be mounted on system cameras, for example a wide-angle lens with low distortion (useful for architectural photos) or the fast telephoto lens for portraits. Several SLR lenses can now be screwed to the system camera using adapter rings. With Nikon and Canon even the autofocus works in this way. Further accessories would be for example viewfinder and flash. Many system cameras do not bring the viewfinder with them right from the start, they have a display. Some photographers, however, swear by the viewfinder because it offers an absolutely unaltered picture, while the sun’s rays and the wrong color values on the display can cause deceptions. On the other hand, there are perspectives that only work with a display: for example, when the camera is upside down or when it takes pictures from the ground. In addition, the display shows all image settings. Autofocus is used to automatically focus on a subject. The sluggish speed of the autofocus in the system camera was long considered a disadvantage, but modern system cameras have now built in the more favorable contrast autofocus. It is still slower than the phase autofocus of a SLR camera, but the latest models like the Sony Alpha 5100 are faster: Focusing and subsequent release takes only 0.14 seconds. The technology works very well with videos and is now better than with a DSLR. When it comes to transport, the system camera is clearly superior, without a mirror it is smaller and lighter.
A large, very light-sensitive sensor leads to low-noise images. There are the following sensor formats, which are important for the purchase decision:
