Unfortunately, the effective resolution is not the same as the manufacturer’s specifications. If you look at them, you’ll be amazed: the numbers like 10,000 dpi and more are impressive. But what can really be achieved in practice – usually much less – should be researched thoroughly. Special photo pages on the Internet often offer helpful information here. Flat bed scanner or special device?but some rules of thumb can be established. For example, that flatbed scanners can usually do less than special devices. Because they are equipped with an additional attachment, the so-called transmitted light unit. This extends the functional range of the scanner, but in general it can’t keep up with real slide scanners. The latter already offer more possibilities in terms of hardware. They score with better color depth or even more density range. But unfortunately this is also a rule of thumb: You have to pay more for better quality. Functional slide scanners have a slot for inserting individual slides or film holders, into which a few or stacks of slides can be inserted, depending on the model. An integrated software then helps with the transfer to the PC, also post-processed – it can detect and remove dust or scratches, for example. A further image processing program provides additional improvements. Depending on the selected setting, however, the end files can be very large. It should therefore be considered whether it really must always be the highest possible resolution, or whether something less is not more.

Scan speed: It varies greatly from model to model. To make it even more complicated, it also depends on the settings of the software. Not unimportant: How many slides can be inserted at once? Batch scans can save a lot of time, not necessarily because it’s fast, but because you can do other work while being scanned. Size and workmanship: It is essential to check beforehand whether it fits where it will be installed later! And: if the model has a film holder, then one can indeed scan several slides one after the other without having to put on another hand. What seems practical at first glance, however, usually turns out to be susceptible to wear and tear. But if you can insert the slides directly into the device, you have to stand next to it, but the model is simply more robust.

Features: Connections play an important role here, but also internal memory or included software. What is important here is what the software can do. Dust and scratch removal are common. But not only the image improvement, also the quality of the scan itself can be decisively influenced by a good software.
