Things to know about the bridge cameraThe bridge camera builds a bridge from the compact to the SLR camera. It is equipped with a lens that can’t be changed, but can cover everything from wide-angle to telephoto. It is equipped with a larger sensor than the compact camera, but this is smaller than a SLR camera. Most bridge cameras work with a contrast autofocus system that is somewhat slower than the phase autofocus of SLR cameras, but the difference is minimal. The advantages of the bridge cameraSince this camera weighs considerably less than a SLR camera, it is easy to carry, but does not fit as well in a jacket or trouser pocket as a compact camera or smartphone. Anyone who is on the move for sport or hiking appreciates its lightness and ease of use. Most bridge cameras have the ability to manually adjust the focus or zoom and respond to the specific photo conditions. The focal length range is often enormous and ranges from 25 to 600 millimeters with the Panasonic Lumix FZ 200, for example. Since the lens is firmly attached to the camera, the image sensor can hardly become dusty. And because no mirror works, the bridge camera works almost noiselessly. Those who want to photograph in a noise-sensitive environment are well served with the bridge camera. The display and viewfinderBefore the photo is taken, the brightness of the shot can be judged in the viewfinder and – if necessary – corrected. The electronic viewfinder sends the image to the display, where the photographer can see it immediately and no longer has to hold the camera’s viewfinder to the eye. If you like taking black-and-white pictures, you can set this directly in the camera and the b/w picture is shown in the display. Other image formats can also be set directly and the image can be evaluated before shooting. If the bridge camera is additionally equipped with a folding display, it allows easy photography from a frog and bird’s eye view. Here the bridge camera is superior to the compact camera, but also to the digital SLR. The autofocus usually has a face recognition, so that sharp portrait photos succeed. For whom is the bridge camera suitable? Since bridge cameras are usually cheaper than a SLR camera, for which different lenses are needed, they are especially suitable for beginners. It lies much better in the hand than a smartphone, the viewfinder can also be held in front of the eye. It does not weigh much and is very suitable for travelling, hiking and other activities. The photos can be compared well with many photos of SLRs and are often not much worse. They take high-quality pictures, are handy, have a lens with a large focal length and are intuitive and easy to use. Many bridge cameras even allow you to shoot a short video, the length of which depends on the storage space and battery charge. The disadvantages of the bridge cameraThe lens of the bridge camera cannot be changed: Thus neither an extreme wide angle nor a high-quality fixed focal length can be used. If you prefer high-quality lenses for changing your camera, you still have to use a digital SLR, even if it is much heavier. In terms of resolution and low noise, the full-format camera is clearly superior to the smaller sensor of the bridge camera. If the light conditions are dark and difficult, the bridge camera has a hard time. Targeted depth blur and bokeh are also difficult to achieve with a bridge camera. Since in many cases f8 is the smallest possible aperture, it is difficult to take pictures at longer shutter speeds, as is the wipe effect. Because the electronic viewfinder and sensor are constantly needed, the bridge camera needs relatively much power. Those who photograph a lot should think about sufficient spare batteries. The best bridge camerasThe Panasonic FZ-200 with its 12 megapixels has an excellent lens with a focal length of 25 – 600 millimeters, the display can be folded and rotated, the camera can record macros and HD video and is well suited for ambitious beginners. The successor is the Panasonic DMC FZ-1000, which already has 20 megapixels and 4K video. The new Panasonic FZ300 is also equipped with an excellent lens, as are the Coolpix P900 from Nikon and the Cyber-Shot DSC-RX 10M2 from Sony. Those who like to travel and want to take good pictures there can choose between these bridge cameras.
