Camera filters are by no means superfluous, they are still considered a useful addition. Although modern digital cameras offer suitable solutions for the problems with recordings by electronically eliminating color casts, haze and high contrast differences, they are also able to provide a wide range of other functions. The automatic camera recognizes the scenery and initiates the necessary measures without the photographer’s intervention. If this is not enough, the pictures can be edited afterwards with programs like Photoshop. In RAW format, the gradation curve and a wide range of specialized controls allow virtually any visual compensation. Soft-focus tools, stamp tools, repair brushes and the like rework an image until it hardly resembles the original. Nevertheless, optical filters make sense, they increase the effects many times over and turn a photo into real art. There are effect and correction filters that deliver the best results for an unadulterated image – better than those achieved by subsequent electronic processing. Classic correction filters are polarization filters, UV and skylight filters as well as gray ND filters.
UV and Skylight are so-called fair weather filters, they primarily provide protection for the very sensitive front lens. For example, blue haze often occurs in high sunlight and at great distances, filtering out UV and skylight. When a photographer chooses this protective function, he always has the appropriate filter in front of the lens. It should be of high quality to avoid reflections and ghost images. High-quality filters also repel adhering dirt. They are not as expensive as a high quality lens and protect it. If scratches occur, changing the filter is cheaper than changing the lens.
A polarizing filter ensures clear, high-contrast colors and reflection-free surfaces. It consists of polarized glass, which reduces unwanted stray light as a rotating pane in front of the lens. By fading out the disturbing superimpositions, the colour contrast increases and the purity increases. By turning the disc, reflections can be more or less reduced, they can even be amplified. SLR photographers like to use circular polarizing filters that improve exposure metering and autofocus. For a system camera, on the other hand, the cheaper linear polarizing filters are sufficient.
The ND filters can be used to photograph flowing movements, the aperture can remain open even in glistening light, and photographs with moderate contrast differences between the earth and sky are also possible. A gray filter significantly reduces the amount of light, allowing longer exposure times and a more open aperture. With a gradient filter, the corresponding “dimmers” can be limited to certain subject areas in order to reduce the excessive contrast difference. ND filters significantly increase the creative scope of a photographer.
