Colour filters put the world in the right light by discolouring the camera or luminaires in a certain spectrum. This is not only an important motivator at events, but also an indispensable tool in photography to create the right lighting mood. This product guide offers a clear listing of the different types of colour filters and their fields of application in practice.

Photo & Camera: Colour filters Video Guide

In the event area, spots are filtered to create certain lighting moods on the stage. The spots are either neutral white (for newer LED or halogen lamps) or classic warm yellow (as usual for tungsten lamps). Color filters can be used to create a special mood on stage, because these colorful effect filters turn simple clamp spots into green, red, blue or rich yellow lights. Color filters for spots are available either as a color filter set for clamping, then they are dimensioned for a certain spot or a flashlight, or as a neutrally cut foil. After the English gel (for light foil) these are often also called gels in the German. The light foils should completely cover the headlight as a slide-in unit, the spot has gates in front of which the foil is clamped, the foil must be significantly larger than the front surface of the headlight. This is especially relevant for film headlights, otherwise they radiate laterally. There are also colour filters for attachable flashes, but these are usually used less as effect filters, but defuse the bright flash light. An important factor of colour correction sets for luminaires is heat resistance. LEDs work cool, but halogen and tungsten spotlights develop – depending on the wattage – a certain heat during operation. Longer lighting burns through unsuitable foils, so make sure before buying that the foils are heat-resistant. Otherwise they should only be used with LEDs, fluorescent tubes or studio flashes to avoid accidents

Colour filters are also used in photography, but then they are used as screw-on filters for the lens. As with other filters, the decisive measuring factor is the objective diameter, not the focal length. The color filters are simply screwed onto the lens and envelop the image to be recorded in a colored veil. This creates spectacular, albeit monochrome colour effects and allows a very special chromatic look, especially at sunsets or nature photography. A certain amount of caution must be exercised when using colour filters for people in the picture, as the skin tones are always a safe anchor for the human eye when viewing pictures. These effect filters are available both as continuous filters and as graduated filters. With gradient filters, for example, panoramas can be recorded in which the sky is colored while the landscape below the horizon remains neutral. Colour filters for cameras are also available as vignettes (discolorations on the edge). In contrast to effect creation in post-production, filters provide better results because they influence the image before shooting. However, colored color filters are not only relevant for color images, but are mainly used in black-and-white photography. Black and white images are not only created by desaturation of the photo, but can also be filtered according to certain color tones. For example, yellow filters increase the contrast between sky and clouds, green filters make the lips look more saturated and red filters create a dark contrast in outdoor landscape photography.

Colour filters are used to create and capture certain moods. With filtered lights, colorful effect spots can be set on stage and screw-on filters for cameras create very special image moods. Color and effect filters not only make the world a little more colorful, but are also important aids in the artistic realization.
