Most server enclosures on the market are 19 inches (48.3 cm) in size and have a rectangular desktop shape. Usually the housings are made of aluminium and have a black or silver colour. Alternatively, there are also server housings with the shape of a tower. This resembles a normal mini or midi tower. There are both housings with and without power supply. If you opt for a server housing with power supply, you will save some money compared to buying a single one. In general, the server housings are compatible with various power supplies and are suitable for the micro ATX, mini ITX and ATX standards. The number of available installation options is also decisive when purchasing. Inside the server housing several hard disks have space and are cooled by a housing fan. In addition, there are also external slots for additional hard disks. The slots are accessible from the front, making it child’s play to change the hard drives. Since there are several hard disks in one server housing, the heat generated during operation is quite high. For this reason, each enclosure has a ventilation system in the form of individual fans. The more and larger the fans, the more effective the cooling. Some server enclosures have one or more USB ports on the front panel.
Before purchasing, users must first make a few important decisions. We should ask ourselves what kind of housing they need and how much money they want to spend at most. Based on the following questions, every user will quickly find an individually suitable server housing. What is the existing server room or parking space like? Is a 19 inch server case better suited for insertion into the server rack or is a tower case better? Generally the 19 inch variants are more popular and are sold in the trade in a larger selection. In direct comparison to the Tower, the 19 inch housings take up less space and can be used in a space-saving server cabinet. Server housings with the shape of a tower are used less in companies and more in private households in the form of a NAS server. In the private sphere a 19 inch case makes little sense, because otherwise the buyers would still have to order a server cabinet. Which power supply and which mainboards does the user want to use in the server housing? If the user does not know in advance which hardware he needs, it is advantageous if the server housing supports all common standards. How many hard disks are needed in the case? Do only internal or external hard disks have to be connected to the server housing? As a rule, up to 7 hard disks can be connected internally behind the front of the case and a maximum of 3 hard disks can be connected externally to the case. If many hard disks are used in one server housing, then this should have an effective ventilation in any case. 2 or even better 3 fans with a size of 40 mm x 20 mm are sufficient for most purposes. A front USB connection is particularly practical and thanks to this, external devices can be connected to the server housing.
