More than 100 years have passed since the first underwater photographs were taken. The Englishman William Thompson succeeded in taking these pictures in 1856. However, Joseph David and Louis Boutan, who photographed underwater in Banyuls-sur-Mer Bay with their photographs, are regarded as the founders of underwater photography. That’s why the underwater photo competition of the Association of German Sport Divers got its name: “Kamera Louis Boutan”. The first motifs of frogs, pikes, otters or diving water birds were taken as colour photographs with autochrome plates by Francis Ward. These photographs date from 1908. Modern underwater photography is attributed to the Austrian Hans Hass. He published his pictures in 1939 in the first book that came on the market in the field of underwater photography. Only ten years later, Franke & Heidecke developed the first underwater housing for a medium-format Rolleimarin SLR camera. The way was therefore paved since 1949 for underwater cameras. Nevertheless, it took another eight years to develop a high-quality 35 mm underwater camera. None other than Jacues-Yves Cousteau and Jean De Wouters were involved in the development of the Calypso-Phot. Nikon produced this model from 1963 under license under the name Nikonos.
